Vitamin D is naturally produced in the skin and helps strengthen bones. The young need vitamin D to make sure their bones grow correctly. The older generation need vitamin D to keep their bones strong.

Some people with darker skin who live in less sunny climates (the UK) need vitamin D supplements as their skin doesn't produce enough. Also, if you don't get out much and cover your skin, and hate fishy foods, you may be vitamin D deficient
