Can I use Bio Oil when I’m pregnant to prevent stretch marks?

Asked by: Lisa W in Newcastle

Bio Oil

Yes you can Lisa.

Bio Oil just contains natural ingredients like Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Calendula Oil, Lavender Oil, Rosemary Oil and Chamomile Oil – so it’s harmless to your baby.

If you rub it on your tummy every day for the first trimester of pregnancy it’ll keep your skin soft and supple and less prone create the scars that are stretch marks as your baby grows.

The unsung hero of Bio Oil is PurCellin Oil which has two important functions. It keeps oxygen away from the vitamins and herbal extracts in Bio Oil so that they are more potent and last longer. It also helps the sin absorb these vitamins into the skin and lock them there while they do there work helping the dermis produce collagen and keep stretchy.

What’s in Ashton and Parsons and is it really safe?

Asked by: Lou from Greater London

Ashton & Palmer's Teething RemedyLou, Aston & Parsons teething powder is perfectly safe and has been on our shelves for years. It contains something called Matricaria which is a plant from the Sunflower family. It has been used for years as an anti-inflamitory and as a mouthwash to cure infections of mouth and gums.

The active ingredient has been removed from the plant in what’s called a Tincture. Alcohol is used to draw out the essence of the herb in minute quantities.  The alcohol is then evaporated off and the resultant residue is mixed with lactose powder.

There is on 0.002 ml of Matricaria in Ashton and Parsons teething powder, which makes it almost a homoeopathic remedy. Despite this it gets good reviews from our customers and others on the web.

Giving the teething powder is relatively simple (depending how cooperative your baby is being). Just place the powder from one sachet (half a sachet from kids under six months old) on the tongue once in the morning and once at night. If their teething really badly you can give the powder every 2 or 3 hours.

Hope that helps

TEDMED Talk: Alan Russell on regenerating our bodies

This video is pretty inspiring. Loads of things can go wrong with our bodies and the best we can do at the moment is try and treat or reduce the symptoms of our illness. In this video, Alan Russell talks about in the near future we may be regenerating organs or limbs.

Beware, this video includes a rather graphic picture of a diabetic ulcer eating away at a foot. There’s also a rather cool slide of a 78 year old man who regrew part of a finger!

Mango Could Protect Against Colon & Breast Cancer

Giant Mango - AustraliaNew research out of Texas AgriLife Research have found that Mango can stop the crowth of cancers that affect the breast and colon.

Mangos contains Polyphenol, a powerful antioxidant in both large and small molecules. The small molecules can get to breast cancers, while the large molecules cannot be absorbed into the body – so make it to the colon. The scientists found that even though Mangos contain less Polyphenol than grape seed extract they might be as effective.

Other good sources of Polyphenols are green tea and green tea extract.

Would You Whiten Your Teeth?

I’ve been interested in tooth whitening ever since a guy I worked with had it done. There seem to be a couple of methods, lasers or bleaching. I think they both achieve the same thing of bleaching stains in micro-cracks that occur in the enable of our teeth as we age.

Dental bleaching is the most common method, and that’s what this guy I knew had. He did it at his dentists who used a high strength hydrogen peroxide gel in a little mouth guard to bathe the teeth in bleach for 20 minutes or so. He was also given a mouth guard and some low strength gel to take home.

You can buy these lower strength whitening kits online, and we’re wondering if anyone out there has tried them. If so, did they work?

The reason we mention this is because we’ve been contact by a company called http://www.smile4you.com that sells these kits, and they given us the discount voucher code SMILE5 that will get our readers 5% off a kit (they cost about £29.99).

We don’t sell these kits directly in the shop – but if we get enough positive feedback – we might just give it a go.

50% of All People Vitamin D Deficient

Anthony Norman a World renowned expert in vitamin D says that up to 50% of everyone in Western Europe and North America may be vitamin D deficient.

He says that the recommended daily dose is far to low at 400-600 international units (UIs)  - and the level should be raised to 2,000 – 4,000 UIs for most adults.

As you may know, vitamin D is made in the skin and is also available in foods like fish, eggs and mushrooms. Vitamin D supplements are also available.

Because this vitamin can be manufactured by the skin, it’s easy to assume that your body will look after itself. However, the process requires you to expose your skin to sunlight to start the chemical reaction. Most people nowadays know of the dangers of the sun, so limit their exposure. Also, in the UK we have had quite a few rubbish summers – so we haven’t had much of a chance to sunbathe even if we wanted too. You may remember that Gwyneth Paltrow recently admitted that she’s got a severe vitamin D deficiency and has been put on a high strength vitamin d supplement.

Vitamin D plays a major role in our health and as well as it’s beneficial impact on bones and glossy hair growth is has also been linked with reduction in ailments like:

  • breast cancer
  • colon cancer
  • type 1 diabetes
  • bone thinning
  • multiple sclerosis
  • Alzheimer’s
